Tuition Remission Guidelines
The Graduate School provides tuition remission and subsidized health insurance to graduate fellows who are paid from our block fellowship grants to colleges. In addition, the Graduate School will provide tuition remission to graduate students who are funded by external fellowships provided the fellowships meet certain criteria (outlined below). The Graduate School has a finite budget for tuition remission and health insurance.

B. HALF FELLOWSHIPS WITH NO AUGMENTATION (i.e., no associated assistantship appointment) receive five (5) credits of tuition remission from the Graduate School.
C. FULL FELLOWSHIPS COMBINED WITH HALF-ASSISTANTSHIPS receive a maximum of twelve (12) credits of tuition remission. The first five (5) credits will be charged to the account associated with the assistantship and the remaining credits, up to seven (7), will be covered by the Graduate School.
D. HALF FELLOWSHIPS (at least 50%) COMBINED WITH HALF-ASSISTANTSHIPS receive a maximum of ten (10) credits of tuition remission. The first five (5) credits will be charged to the account associated with the assistantship and the remaining credits, up to five (5), will be covered by the Graduate School.
E. HALF FELLOWSHIPS (at least 50%) COMBINED WITH FULL ASSISTANTSHIPS receive a maximum of twelve (12) credits. The first ten (10) credits will be charged to the account associated with the assistantship and the remaining credits, up to two (2), will be covered by the Graduate School.
F. PARTIAL FELLOWSHIPS THAT ARE LESS THAN 50% OF THE FULL FELLOWSHIP MINIMUM will receive no tuition remission.
G. THE GRADUATE SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE TUITION REMISSION ONLY FOR CREDITS THAT ARE DEGREE APPLICABLE.
II. TUITION REMISSION FOR EXTERNALLY-FUNDED GRADUATE FELLOWS
(use the “Request for Tuition Remission for External Fellowships and Scholarships” form found at http://www.gradschool.umd.edu/gss/forms/external%20fellowship.pdf)
This group of fellows consists of graduate students who are recipients of prestigious national fellowships funded from a source outside of the university. In these cases, a memorandum of understanding or contractual agreement must be on file at the Graduate School. Unless specified in the MOU or contract, the number of credits remitted by the Graduate School will be as follows:
A. FULL FELLOWSHIPS WITH NO AUGMENTATION (i.e., no associated assistantship appointment) receive a maximum of ten (10) credits of tuition remission. These fellowships must carry a stipend amount equal to the minimum stipend level for graduate fellows as set by the Graduate School.
B. HALF FELLOWSHIPS WITH NO AUGMENTATION (i.e., no associated assistantship appointment) receive five (5) credits of tuition remission. These fellowships must carry a stipend amount equal to one half of the minimum stipend level for graduate fellows as set by the Graduate School.
C. PARTIAL FELLOWSHIPS THAT ARE LESS THAN 50% OF A FULL FELLOWSHIP receive no tuition remission.
D. THE GRADUATE SCHOOL WILL PROVIDE TUITION REMISSION ONLY FOR CREDITS THAT ARE DEGREE APPLICABLE.
E. NOTE: If the fellowship stipend is $30,000 or less, the Graduate School will cover tuition remission as stipulated above. If the fellowship is $40,000 or more, the Graduate School will not cover tuition; for fellowships between $30,000 and $40,000, the Graduate School will provide prorated remission.
III. FEDERAL TRAINING GRANTS
(use the “Training Grant Fellowship Matching Tuition Remission Request” form found at http://www.gradschool.umd.edu/gss/forms/Training%20Grant%20Matching%20Fellowship.pdf)
For Federal Training grants which cover only a small part of the tuition for fellows, the Graduate School may provide up to three (3) credits per semester as an institutional match for full-time fellows on such grants; three (3) credits per academic year for part-time fellows; and one (1) credit per semester for fellows advanced to candidacy. These remissions must be matched with real dollars provided to the tuition pool by the department, college, and/or grant on the condition that for every credit of remission from the Graduate School, the department, college and/or grant must provide two (2) credits of tuition dollars.
Students taking fewer than three (3) credits will not receive tuition remission. We will provide no tuition remission to students who also hold full- or part-time RA or TA appointments. The match must not be made by students paying their own tuition.
IV. INTERNALLY FUNDED FELLOWS NOT ON UNIVERSITY OR DEAN'S FUNDING FROM THE GRADUATE SCHOOL
The Graduate School will not provide tuition remission to fellows whose funds come from departmental or college sources, state funds from any source, including DRIF, UM and UMCP Foundations, and Research Assistants funded by grants of any sort, unless previous agreements have been made with the Graduate School. Tuition for these fellowships should be charged to the same account to which the fellowship stipend is being charged.
V. TUITION REMISSION FOR SUMMER AND WINTER TERM
The Graduate School does not provide fellowship tuition remission for the Summer Sessions or Winter Term.
VI. TUITION REMISSION FOR NON-STANDARD TUITION RATE GRADUATE PROGRAMS
Some graduate programs, such as the Full and Part-time MBA, Accelerated MBA, and Executive MBA, have higher credit hour rates or flat fee pricing. Students enrolled in courses in these programs will be responsible for the difference in tuition costs above the standard rate covered by tuition remission.
NOTE: Tuition remission for the Ann G. Wylie Dissertation Fellowships is administered by the Graduate School. There is no associated tuition remission for the Flagship Fellowships or the Summer Research Fellowships provided by the Graduate School.
