The Graduate School PhD Completion Project Workshops

Each year, the Graduate School holds a series of events that provide advice and support for doctoral students at various stages of their graduate career. Our completion workshops bring leading experts to campus to discuss such topics as time management, writing a dissertation proposal, and preparing a job talk. The Graduate School has also offered the PhD Winter Write-In, which provides a structured time and space for the writing interspersed with presentations on managing the dissertation process. We especially encourage underrepresented minority graduate students to join us.
The Dissertation House, a program of the National Science Foundation’s PROMISE: Maryland’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP), consists of multi-day sessions that facilitate successful completion of the doctoral degree. The workshops, meetings, and seminars emphasize writing the dissertation, preparing for the defense, and communicating with faculty.
English Editing for International Graduate Students Program (EEIGS)
A Graduate School program, EEIGS uses the Volunteer Service Corps to offer free editing services to international graduate students who are preparing papers, theses, and dissertations.
The Learning Assistance Service’s Dissertation Support Group
This support group helps doctoral students with the skills and motivation needed to complete their dissertations. Students discuss factors that can lead to dissertation "deadlock" and learn strategies for addressing writer’s block and other obstacles to completion. Registration is limited.
The Learning Assistance Service’s Structured Groups for the Writing Process (for ESOL graduate students)
This group program provides assistance with English to speakers of other languages from all disciplines. Over seven sessions, students will strengthen their writing skills while learning the building blocks of clear, graduate-level writing: unity, support, coherence, and sentence skills. Registration is limited.
Winter Dissertation Writing Retreat
Sponsored by the Learning Assistance Service, the Graduate School, and McKeldin Library, this intensive two-day annual retreat offers a structured, supportive environment to help doctoral students increase writing productivity and reach writing goals.
Graduate Student Multipurpose Room and Study Area
The Graduate School and University Libraries have collaborated to open two new dedicated spaces for graduate students. 3100A McKeldin Library provides a quiet environment for graduate writers. 2105 McKeldin Library provides a multipurpose room for individual study or group project meetings. Both spaces require graduate student identity cards for entrance.
Community of Writers (CoW)
A continuation of the 2010 PROMISE Dissertation House (DH), a program of PROMISE: Maryland AGEP, the Communitiy of Writers (CoW) provides a space for DH participants and other UMCP doctoral students to continue meeting and working on their proposals and dissertations. Interested Ph.D. students working on proposals and dissertations may contact Amy Martin for more information.
