Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Help Page

Note: This page is always under construction. The Division of Research and Graduate Studies is continually searching for new pages that may be helpful to our students as they create acceptable .rtf, .pdf of MS Word files of their theses and dissertations. If you have a link that might be helpful, please email it to the webmaster.

Dealing with Scanned Images / Image Files:

Some dissertations include images as an integral part of their text. If you do not have a scanner (or free access to one) and your thesis is very image-dependent, it might be worth your while to invest in one: usually, a decent quality flatbed scanner can be found for under $50. Sites such as Pricewatch.com will give you an idea of the available models and prices.

If your document does NOT contain a large amount of images, you are probably better off doing one of the following:

  • going to Kinkos or another office-service company. Kinkos can take pretty much any image and turn it into any electronic format: .gif, .jpg, .tiff, .cgm. These images can be inserted easily into a word processing document.
  • For those who are a bit more tech-savvy, the Office of Academic Services maintains a Graphics Lab that offers users use of their scanners free of charge. For a fee, OACS personnel can assist users.
  • Some Wam Labs also have scanners available, attached to Macs. These PCs run a program called Ofoto; instructions for using Ofoto can be found here.
