The General Research Board was created
in 1957 to provide summer salaries, equipment and even publication costs
for men engaged in independent research. Designed largely to promote research
in the humanities and social sciences which did not share proportionately
in the vast research contracts from government and industry the
board sought to encourage promising young faculty members as well as established
scholars.
