Applying to Graduate School at the University of Maryland

To be considered for admission to the Graduate School, each applicant must meet the requirements listed below, be recommended by a graduate degree program for admission, and pay all requisite fees. Applications are reviewed by admissions committees in each graduate degree program; the decisions of those committees are submitted to a representative of the Dean of the Graduate School, who tenders the Dean's official admissions decision.

The University of Maryland Graduate School accepts applications through the Online Graduate Application. The Online Graduate Application, however, is only the first part of the application process. Applicants are also required to submit transcripts, test scores (if required), a personal statement, letters of recommendation, as well as complete any materials required by the graduate degree program.

Applicants to The Robert H. Smith School of Business, the Online Master of Life Sciences, the Online Public Health Informatics program, the Online Food Safety Risk Analysis program, the Online Fire Protection Engineering program, the Online Project Management program, and the Mathematics of Advanced Industrial Technology program must contact their respective programs for application information.

Make sure you meet the Graduate School's minimum academic requirements.

You must have a 4-year baccalaureate degree from a regionally-accredited U.S. institution; or the equivalent of that degree from a non-U.S. institution; and

You must have earned a 3.0 (out of 4) Grade Point Average in all Undergraduate and Graduate coursework.

Take Note of Your Graduate Program's Application Deadlines and Admissions Requirements.

Make sure you have the relevant academic experience / coursework and have taken all required standardized tests such as the GRE, GMAT, Miller Analogies Test, TOEFL, or IELTS. The University's institutional score reporting code is 5814 for these tests.

International applicants must also do the following:

 
Complete the University's Online Graduate Application and pay the non-refundable $60.00 Application Fee.

To facilitate the review of your application, submit the Online Graduate Application by the Graduate School's Priority Processing date for Fall 2008 admissions, December 1st, 2007 Priority Processing Date. Supporting documents, such as transcripts, will be accepted and processed until each program's official application deadline. Please see your Graduate Program's listing in the Graduate Catalog for details.

To ensure all materials are reviewed, the Online Graduate Application should be submitted before sending any other materials to the University.

Complete your Graduate Program's online Application Supplemental Form (ASF).
You will receive your login and password for your program's Application Supplemental Form (ASF) via email several (2-4) business days after completing your Online Graduate Application. During peak processing times (December-early February), it may be up to 7 business days before you receive your ASF. Using the ASF, you will be able to submit:
  • Online Letters of Recommendation [STRONGLY ENCOURAGED ] ;
  • Personal Statement of Goals, Research Interests, and Experiences [REQUIRED] ;
  • Electronic files of your writing sample, resume, vita, or other required materials, if requested by the program ;
  • Any other information specifically required by the Graduate Program.

If after 7 business days you have not received your ASF, please contact The Graduate School via email.

 
Submit your supporting materials / transcripts to the University's Graduate Admissions office.

1-2 business days AFTER you have completed the above steps, forward your undergraduate and graduate transcripts and any hard-copy admissions materials to the University of Maryland Graduate Admissions office.

To ensure accurate processing, please send your supporting materials to the University as a single complete package

Please remove all staples from your documentation prior to sending, and please ensure that the name you used on your Online Graduate Application and your date of birth are on all materials.
