Deadline Schedule for Graduate Students

This document lists ALL relevant Graduate School deadlines for Graduate Students, including when to file the Application for Graduation, Approved Program Form, Nomination of Examining Committees, and Thesis / Dissertation-related deadlines. All Graduate Students should check this document at the beginning of every semester in which they are registered.

Students should also check with their Department / Program for relevant deadlines. Departments often mandate deadlines earlier than those listed in the Deadline Schedule.

Graduate Assistant Survey Report

The Graduate Assistant Survey was developed in order to examine the kinds of duties employed graduate
students have and the amount of time spent on these job-related tasks. Administrators were also
interested in how the experiences of graduate assistants may vary across University departments.
Through the survey, administrators intend to gather data on the “worklife” of employed graduate students
as it pertains to the completion of their academic responsibilities. By gaining an overall view of the
graduate assistant experience, campus administrators plan to influence institutional policies and practices
to ultimately improve or encourage degree completion.

Provost William Destler appointed a committee of faculty, staff, and graduate students to examine the complex issues affecting completion of doctoral degrees at the University of Maryland and to make recommendations for improving completion rates. The committee issued its report on June 6. The Graduate School welcomes questions or comments.

Thesis and Dissertation Style Guide

The Thesis and Dissertation Style Guide is the official style guide for all University of Maryland Theses and Dissertaions. Since the Fall of 2003, the Graduate School has not accepted hard-copy Thesis and Dissertation documents. Instead, through an arrangment with Proquest Learning Services, the Graduate School accepts these documents online via the World Wide Web (PDF, .rtf, and MS Word format only). This Style Guide lists the revised electronic and formatting required by the new submission process, as well as outlines the details of the submission process.

Users of statistical packages such as SAS, SPSS, STATA, and those who feel they need additional help with creating an acceptable electronic file should click here for the ETD Help Page, a clearinghouse of sites and instructions that may prove helpful.

Guidelines for the English Editing for International Graduate Students (EEIGS) Program

(Services available September through June; closed July and August)

The English Editing for International Graduate Students (EEIGS) program, operating under the aegis of The Graduate School, offers free editing services for international graduate students who must present their dissertations, theses, and other required papers in English. The University's Volunteer Service Corps staffs this program.

The EEIGS program operates as follows:

  1. Eligible graduate students may request EEIGS services from the program’s coordinator through email (eeigs@umd.edu). The request should provide information about the student (name, telephone number, major/department, and native country and language) and about the project (title, length (up to 30 double-spaced pages*), due date, and whether it is a dissertation, thesis, paper, or other written work).
  2. The EEIGS coordinator will seek a volunteer editor for each requesting student and report the results to the student. A student may request a specific editor; however, all requests should initially go through the EEIGS coordinator.
  3. The student is expected to inform his or her advisor or the Director of Graduate Studies of the program in which he/she is majoring about the aid being received through this program.
  4. EEIGS editors edit electronically in Microsoft Word and communicate with students exclusively through email.
  5. EEIGS is a free service run by volunteers. EEIGS volunteer editors are not writing coaches or tutors; they edit and proofread only. Further, EEIGS assumes no responsibility for the final edited draft.
  6. EEIGS only accepts work requests that can be accomplished within a reasonable timeframe.

*Larger papers can be submitted in sections. Alternatively, there are also graduate students and others on the University of Maryland campus who offer English language editing services for a fee. They may be contacted through the Writing Center, Department of English, 1205 Tawes Hall, 301 405-3785.
